The City That Buried Her Name

Chapter 30 · The Childhood They Stole

The archive door had no handle.

Noa pressed her palm against the black metal, and the surface shivered beneath her skin. Somewhere inside the Sanctum, gears turned without teeth. A lock clicked. Then another. The door remained shut.

“Tell me that was the right key,” Evelyn whispered.

Her voice was close enough to brush Noa’s ear. Too close. The memory of Evelyn’s mouth against hers flashed through Noa’s mind—warmth, hesitation, the sharp taste of fear—and vanished before she could hold it.

Noa’s fingers tightened against the door. “It was a key.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“No. It wasn’t.”

Behind them, the corridor groaned. Cracks ran through the marble floor, glowing with the pale blue residue of failed naming contracts. Every few seconds, the city screamed beyond the sealed windows. Names were coming loose. People were forgetting their addresses, their families, the shape of their own hands. The Sanctum had called Noa a disaster source, but the disaster had already been built into the walls.

Evelyn glanced over her shoulder. Her uniform was torn at the sleeve, the silver insignia of the Contract Office blackened by the core’s collapse. A thin line of blood traced her jaw.
