The City That Buried Her Name

Chapter 33 · The Name She Cannot Say

The first thing Noa heard was the city screaming.

Not with one voice. With thousands.

Names tore loose from the shattered veins of the Sanctum and rose through the streets in a storm of syllables. They struck the buried walls like rain made of glass—Joren, Maris, Tallow, Vey, names that had been stolen, buried, reassigned, or forgotten. Some belonged to the living. Some belonged to the dead. Some belonged to people who had never known they were missing anything at all.

Noa crouched beneath the collapsed archway, one hand pressed against the stone and the other locked around Evelyn's fingers.

The hand in hers was warm.

That was the first anchor.

Warm skin. A pulse beating too quickly. A shallow scrape along the knuckles. The faint smell of iron and wintergreen oil.

She held on as if the details could keep the woman beside her from vanishing.

Across the chamber, the remains of the Master Contract burned without flame. Black strips of parchment drifted through the air, their ink twisting into frantic shapes before dissolving. The central dais had split open. Beneath it, a shaft descended into darkness, wider than any stairwell had a right to be.
