Chapter 36 · The Echo She Leaves Behind
The First Ledger slammed shut.
The sound was not paper meeting paper. It was a city biting down on its own tongue.
Every window in the Sanctum shattered at once. Glass flew inward, glittering through the red light pouring from the floor. The marble beneath Evelyn’s boots split in a jagged circle around the Ledger, and something far below exhaled through the cracks.
The breath smelled of wet stone, old ashes, and roses left too long in a grave.
“Noa!” Evelyn lunged forward.
Her hand met nothing.
A second ago, Noa had been standing inside the Ledger’s collapsing core, blood bright across her palm as she carved the final clause into the living pages. Her face had been pale, her mouth trembling with pain, but her eyes had held that impossible, stubborn light.
Names cannot become cages.
Memory does not belong to its owner.
Then the Ledger folded over her.
Now there was only a black seam in the air, narrowing by the heartbeat.
Silas Morn stood on the other side of the chamber, his coat torn open and his silver namer’s chain burning against his throat. The careful composure he wore like a second skin had finally split.
