Chapter 27 · Tear Open the Dawn
The Ashlight Core changed color.
Red drained from the chamber in slow, luminous veins, as if the machine were bleeding itself empty. Gold poured through the conduits instead, bright enough to turn every shard of broken glass into a tiny sun. The heat did not lessen. It sharpened. It pressed against Eve Marr’s skin until sweat crawled down her spine and evaporated before it reached the waistband of her ruined jacket.
Across the circular platform, Evelyn stood with one hand braced against the core housing.
She looked like Eve reflected in black water—same narrow jaw, same storm-gray eyes, same scar beneath the left cheekbone. But Evelyn’s silver uniform was clean, untouched by ash or blood, and the thin cables braided into her arms pulsed with the old red light.
Now those cables trembled.
“You broke the sequence,” Evelyn whispered.
Her voice came through the chamber speakers and from her own mouth at the same time. The overlap made the words vibrate in Eve’s teeth.
Eve tightened her grip around Cain’s hand. His fingers were cold despite the furnace heat. Beneath his ribs, the purge protocol still clung to his heart like an invisible fist.
