"You added a clause to my contract without my signature." I slapped the folder on his desk hard enough to rattle the pen cup. "That's not legal, Luca. That's not even close to legal."
Luca didn't look up from whatever he was reading. "Nothing about this family is legal, Nora. You knew that when you signed the first page."
"The first page said one year. It didn't say I sleep in your sight." I jabbed the paper again, right at the clause his lawyer had typed in cold gray ink. Section 14. No Sight Clause. Effective immediately. Subject shall remain within visual range of L. Voss between the hours of ten p.m. and six a.m. "This isn't a bookkeeping term I've heard before."
He finally looked up, and the look went straight through me the way it always did, like he was auditing my face for the lie he already knew was there. "Marco Genna put a price on your head this morning. Fifty grand for a dead accountant. You want to explain to me why I shouldn't lock that door?"
That stopped me. My stomach dropped somewhere around my knees. "He what?"
"You heard me.
