Chapter 27 · No Camera
"Ask her." Kessler tips his chin at me like I'm a exhibit, not a person. "Ask your CFO if two years of Marchetti ledgers ever balanced. Because I'm betting she already knows."
The generator kicks on somewhere below us, one weak bulb sputtering over the kitchen island, and Luca still hasn't said a word. That's the part that scares me. Luca Voss always has a word. He's got three ready before I finish a sentence. Right now his jaw's working like he's chewing glass.
"Luca." My voice comes out flat, which surprises me, because inside I'm somewhere past furious. "You knew who framed Danny for a week. Now I find out your own books have been cooked under my name for two years. Which lie were you going to tell me first?"
"I didn't know about Sergio." His voice is low, rough at the edges. "Not until tonight. I swear that part."
"Swear." I laugh, and it's an ugly sound. "That word doesn't mean anything coming out of your mouth anymore."
Kessler leans against the counter, arms crossed, enjoying this way more than a federal agent should. "For what it's worth, Ms. Vale, the Bureau doesn't care about your marriage.
