The Don's One-Year Contract

Chapter 6 · Federal Ink

"FBI. Open it or we open it for you."

The badge hits the glass before I even see the guy's face. Gold shield, chain around his neck, three more agents fanned out behind him on the marble like they own the lobby of Voss Capital. I'm still holding my coffee. I set it down so my hands stop shaking.

"Ms. Vale." The lead one says my name like he's read a whole file on me. Maybe he has. "Special Agent Reyes. We have a subpoena for the financial records of Voss Holdings, specifically anything under your signature."

"My signature's on payroll and vendor contracts," I say. "That's it."

"That's not what the ledger says."

My stomach drops through the floor. The ledger. The one I flagged three weeks ago, the one with the shell accounts routed through a bakery in Cicero that doesn't sell bread. I never told Reyes that. Nobody outside this building knows I found it — except Luca.

He's already crossing the lobby, jacket still buttoned, like he walked out of a meeting the second security called him. "Gentlemen." His voice is flat, easy, the voice he uses right before he takes somebody apart.
