The vision broke.
They crashed onto a lower archive floor. Kael landed on his back. Sera hit his chest, and the air left him in a rough grunt.
For half a second, neither of them moved.
His hand was still wrapped around hers.
His heartbeat hammered under her palm. Dust streaked his cheek. Blood ran from the cut beneath his chin and disappeared into his collar.
Sera pushed up. “What did she say?”
Kael’s eyes stayed on hers. “You saw it.”
“I saw a girl on a table.”
“You saw enough.”
“Not even close.”
“Get off me.”
“Answer me first.”
His hand slid from hers to her waist. Not gentle. Not rough enough to hurt. Just firm enough to stop her from standing.
Sera felt the heat of his palm through her jacket.
“You’re enjoying this?” she asked.
“I’m trying to keep you from falling through another floor.”
“Liar.”
“Fierce accusation.”
“Keep flirting and I’ll break your fingers.”
His mouth twitched. “You’ve threatened that three times today.”
“And you still have all ten. I’m losing patience.”
“Good. Patience gets people killed.
