The Ember Clause

Chapter 8 · The Bride Breaks a Rule

Nora came back choking on smoke that wasn't there.

Her knees hit wet concrete. Somebody shouted her name. Cameras flashed through the dark maintenance tunnel, bright enough to stab behind her eyes.

Caden had one hand locked around her upper arm. The other was pressed to his ribs, where blood soaked through his black shirt.

"Don't move," he said.

Nora looked at him.

"You dragged me into somebody else's memory again. You don't get to tell me not to move."

His jaw tightened. "The ring did that."

"The ring is on my hand because you put it there."

Behind them, reporters shoved against a line of Cross security. A cop kept yelling for everyone to stay back, which did exactly nothing. Selene stood near the maintenance door in her pale coat, dry somehow despite the water dripping down the walls. She watched Nora's ring, not Nora.

That was the part Nora hated most.

Not the cameras. Not the cops waiting to slap cuffs on her.
