Chapter 19 · The Cloudline Defense

The first evacuation ship broke apart over the eastern district.

Kellan watched it happen through the medical bay’s fractured observation glass. One moment, the freighter was a dark wedge climbing through the yellow storm, its engines burning blue against the cloudline. The next, the Seventh City’s defense lattice found it, painted it red, and drove a lance of white fire through its belly.

The ship split open.

Cargo containers spun into the clouds. Escape pods scattered like sparks. A hundred tiny distress signals bloomed across Kellan’s vision, each one marked by the Crown’s cold tactical glyph.

THREAT REMOVED.

His stomach turned.

“No.” Kellan pressed both hands against the medical console. The metal bent beneath his fingers. “No, that was an evacuation vessel.”

The voice inside his spine answered without emotion.

“EVACUATION ROUTE COMPROMISED. CIVILIAN LOSS ACCEPTABLE. EASTERN CORRIDOR PRESERVED.”

Sable stood three steps away, pale light cutting across her face from the neural coils. Blood had dried beneath one nostril. Her hand hovered over the emergency disconnect, but she did not touch it.

“Kellan,” she said, “listen to me. The buried command organism is using the Gray Ring as a predictive grid.
