The Ember Crown Directive

Chapter 30 · The Stormline Defense

The first warning arrived as a tremor beneath Brom Hark’s boots.

Not the deep, grinding shudder of the city cracking open. That had become background noise in Seventh City—the sound of foundations surrendering, of streets splitting beneath columns of blue-white fire. This vibration was sharper. Rhythmic. Mechanical.

Brom looked up from the maintenance pit.

Above him, the abandoned hangar groaned. Dust sifted from the ceiling in pale curtains, glittering in the red emergency light. Around him, mechanics dragged power cables through ankle-deep water while half-dismantled warframes hung from gantries like skinned giants. Their armor plates were black with age, their joints packed with rust, their optic lenses blind.

Then every dead lens opened.

A hundred dim red lights flickered across the hangar.

Someone dropped a wrench.

“Tell me that was the city,” Nessa, one of the coolant technicians, whispered.

Brom wiped grease across his jaw and listened.

The vibration came again.

Thrum. Thrum. Thrum.

This time, something answered from the storm beyond the broken hangar doors—a distant concussion that rolled through the underground levels and shook water from the pipes.

Brom climbed onto the nearest service platform. “Get me a surface feed.”

“We don’t have a surface feed,” said Jory.
