Chapter 6 · Dropped Into Witch Academy at Midnight - Chapter 6: The Girl in Lockup
Cassandra catches me before I've even left the infirmary.
"Morris." Her voice cuts through the hallway noise like a blade through silk. "A word."
I stop. Turn. She's standing by one of those arched windows, moonlight making her look like some Victorian painting. All sharp edges and cold perfection. The kind of face that could sell ice to a snowman or tell you your dog died without blinking.
"Yeah?"
"What you did in there." She steps closer. Her boots don't make a sound on the stone floor. How the hell does she do that. "Don't do it again."
I blink. "You mean the part where I saved Vivienne's life?"
"I mean the part where you revealed your hand." Her eyes are gray. Not blue-gray or green-gray. Just gray. Like storm clouds with all the rain wrung out. "Half the academy now knows you can channel energy without a focus. The other half will know by breakfast."
"So?"
"So." She's close enough now I can smell whatever soap she uses. Something sharp. Mint maybe. Or just pure cold. "You've painted a target on your back. Again. Every bloodline family with a grudge against the Midnight Summoner line is now watching you.
