The Glasswater Death Contract

Chapter 20 · The Price of No Shadow

The ash of the contract did not fall.

It hung in the air above the flooded market, turning slowly in the blue-black rain. Each fragment glimmered with a trapped image: a child losing a red mitten, an old man forgetting his wife’s name, a woman standing on a bridge with a suitcase in her hand. Memories without owners. Memories waiting to be claimed.

Then the bell beneath the water rang.

Once.

The sound rolled through the Glasswater Night Market and shook every stall, every lantern, every bone in Lin Lan’s body. The black water surged over the cobblestones. It climbed her boots, cold enough to make her toes cramp, and carried dozens of pale faces beneath its surface.

Tavi swore and grabbed the nearest iron post. “That wasn’t in the contract.”

“There is no contract,” Lin said.

Her voice came out raw. She could still feel the burned shape of her fingerprint on the inside of her wrist. The mark pulsed whenever the water rose, as if something below the market had found her heartbeat and was answering it.

Soren Pike staggered beside the shattered fountain. One hand pressed against his ribs.
