The Glasswater Death Contract

Chapter 28 · The Tide Remembers Us

The names began to scream.

Not aloud at first. The sound crawled through the archive as a vibration beneath the floorboards, a thin metallic shiver that climbed Lin Lan’s bones and set every old injury burning. The black coat hung open between her hands. Its inner lining was covered in ink—hundreds of names stitched into the fabric with silver thread, each letter twitching as if something alive moved beneath it.

At the top, her mother’s handwriting remained still.

If the city must be saved, let my daughter choose what I could not choose.

Below it, the final line continued to write itself.

L I N—

The unfinished letters convulsed. A crack split through the archive wall. Glass dust rained from the ceiling, catching the blue market-light like frozen rain.

Nara staggered.

Lin caught her before her knees struck the floor. Nara’s body was warm now. Not borrowed-warm, not the temporary heat of a memory pressed into empty skin. Her pulse beat hard against Lin’s palm, irregular but stubborn.

“Stay with me,” Lin said.

Nara’s fingers closed around her wrist. “I am.”

The answer was quiet.
