"Like what?"

"Like you forgot this marriage is a prison sentence."

His hand tightened around mine. "I haven't forgotten anything."

The connector door buckled inward.

Dorian stood.

I caught his sleeve. "What are you doing?"

"Buying you a clear path."

"You don't get to decide which one of us gets shot."

"I do when I'm the one with the rank."

"You were stripped of your rank."

"Then I get to decide as your husband."

"That clause isn't in the contract."

"It should be."

He yanked the door open.

The first soldier stepped through with his rifle raised.

Dorian hit him before he could aim. One hand caught the barrel and slammed it into the soldier's jaw. The man dropped. Dorian kicked the rifle beneath the coupling.

The second soldier fired.

Dorian twisted aside. The bullet grazed his shoulder, ripping through his uniform and skin.

I shoved the key through the maintenance gap and into the relay socket.

The platform flashed red.

"Now, Mara!" Dorian barked.

I turned the key.

Outside, the gun batteries powered down with a deep mechanical groan.

Ten seconds.
