Chapter 25 · The Name on the Line

Dorian's hand locked around my waist and yanked me behind the station's broadcast console.

A rifle cracked through the spot where my head had been.

"Get off me!" I drove my elbow into his ribs.

"Keep your head down."

"You dragged me into a shooting gallery, and now you're giving orders?"

"Yes. That's exactly what I'm doing."

His body covered mine as another bullet punched through the wooden panel above us. Dust rained into my hair. His coat pressed against my back, warm from his skin, while the hard edge of his pistol dug into my hip.

Not comforting.

Not even close.

Still, his breath brushed my ear.

"Three guards on the east platform," he murmured. "Two by the stairwell. More coming through the judgment hall."

"And your plan?"

"Get you onto the train."

"Your train is locked down."

"Then I'll unlock it."

"With what? A charming speech?"

His mouth skimmed my temple when he turned. "You married an officer. You should know I carry more than one weapon."

I shoved his face away. "Don't use that word like it makes me helpless."

"It makes you protected."

"It makes me a target with a ring.
