Chapter 12 · The First Rewrite
The archive door doesn't have a lock.
Mara stares at the smooth iron surface, her brother's key burning hot against her palm. Contract hounds are three blocks behind her. Julian's heartbeat is stuttering in her chest like a dying engine. And the one door that's supposed to hold the city's original blood oath doesn't even have a keyhole.
"Of course it doesn't," she mutters. Her breath comes out in white puffs. The archive sits at the bottom of Greyhaven's old judicial hall, half-submerged in the canal. Moss grows thick on the stone walls. The air smells like rust and stagnant water.
She presses her hand flat against the door. The metal is ice cold. Her fingers are still numb from the judge's mark crawling up her neck, but she can feel something underneath the iron. A hum. A pulse that matches the rhythm in her chest.
Julian's pulse.
"You've got to be kidding me."
She pulls the key out of her coat pocket. It's still warm from the memory lock, still vibrating faintly like it's got a charge running through it. Elias made this. Elias left it for her.
