Chapter 15 · You're definitely insane
"You're definitely insane," Leo said, but he stood up anyway, wiping grime from his pants. "But hey, if we're going to die, I'd rather do it while watching a corporate building collapse. Which way?"
"Follow me. And stay low," Reid commanded. "If you see anyone in a white suit, you run the other way. Got it?"
"Got it, boss."
As they moved through the labyrinth of the slums, Reid kept his senses dialed into the Veil. He could feel the corporate grid—a suffocating web of electronic surveillance and artificial power. It was clumsy compared to the Current, but it was vast. He needed to find a blind spot, a place where the city's digital eyes couldn't see.
"So," Leo whispered as they ducked behind a rusted shipping container. "The girl. Why do you care? Is she your sister? A girlfriend? Some kind of secret weapon?"
"She's a kid who doesn't belong in a cage," Reid replied. "And she has something that belongs to my people."
"Your people?" Leo frowned. "What people? You're not from around here, are you? I mean, I know you're not from Ashport, but you don't sound like you're from the Outer Rim either."
Reid stopped.
