The Last Current: Reborn in Ashport

Chapter 44 · Gold Eyes

"Tell me where Leo went." Reid slammed Mira against the vault door before the last warning light stopped flashing.

Her shoulder hit steel. Her breath caught, but her hand came up fast. Two fingers pressed under his jaw, right on the nerve that could drop a man twice his size.

"Take your hand off me."

"Answer first."

"You want answers? Get off my throat."

Reid tightened his grip on the front of her armor. The smart-fiber plates clicked under his fingers. Her pulse jumped against his palm, quick and hard. He could feel the heat of her through the collar, close enough to catch the sharp mint on her breath.

Mira looked furious.

Good. Furious people talked.

"The kid was behind me," she said. "Then the vault opened its inner seal, the lights went white, and he was gone. I didn't touch him."

"You brought him here."

"Your little ghost map brought us here."

"Don't call it that."

"Then stop dragging us through buildings that want to eat us."

A deep metal groan rolled through the room. The vault floor shifted under their boots.
