Chapter 47 · If you fight me

He didn't move.

Mira stepped into his space and caught his hand anyway.

Her palm was warm. Her fingers locked around his wrist with trained strength, not enough to hurt, but enough to remind him she could. The silver fabric of her sleeve brushed his knuckles. Her face was close now. Close enough for him to feel her breath against his cheek.

"If you fight me," she said quietly, "Leo dies. If you let the Current break loose, Leo dies. If you hand him over, Helix opens him up to find out why the dead keep answering you. Those are your choices."

Reid stared at her. "You left one out."

"Which one?"

"I take you down, break the team, and carry him out."

"You can try."

"That's not a no."

Her thumb pressed against his pulse.

"It's a warning."

The contact sent a thin spark through his arm. The Current recoiled from her light, then pushed back. Gold flickered beneath Reid's skin.

Mira's breath caught.

"There," she whispered. "You feel that?"

"I feel you lying."

"About what?"

"You didn't come here to arrest me."

For the first time, she looked genuinely angry. "Don't flatter yourself."
