Chapter 58 · You heard it

He didn't answer.

Mira stepped closer. Her shoulder pressed his chest. The wind from the drones tugged at her jacket, but she didn't look away.

"You heard it," she said. "The thing on the other side."

"Yes."

"It knew your name."

"It knew more than that."

"What did you give it?"

"Nothing."

"That isn't what I asked."

"No."

"Reid."

"We need to move."

"You don't get to shut me out after I burned my entire life down beside you."

"Your life was already burning."

Her hand struck his chest.

Not hard enough to hurt him. Hard enough to make the point.

"Don't tell me what I lost."

"I saw the way Vale talked to you."

"You saw one order. You didn't see the contract. You didn't see what he had on my family."

"Then tell me."

"Why? So you can decide whether I am useful?"

"I already decided."

She froze.

The nearest searchlight slid over them. Reid pulled her into the shadow of a ventilation tower. His hand closed around her upper arm. Her back met the metal wall. He stood between her and the light.

Her breath caught.

"What did you decide?" she asked.

"That you stay with me."
