Chapter 11 · The Date She Wrote for Herself
The train screamed around them.
Not with the metallic shriek of wheels against rails, but with something deeper—the sound of a city being torn open beneath its own foundations. Brass ribs flexed along the ceiling. Blue fire leaked through the seams in the walls. Outside the windows, Nacre City stretched into impossible shapes: towers bent like candle wax, streets running vertically into a black sky, clocks with their hands spinning backward.
Eve hit the floor hard enough to bite her tongue.
Blood filled her mouth. She tasted iron, coal smoke, and the bitter chemical tang of broken hourglass sand. Somewhere behind her, Sora was sobbing. Somewhere ahead, the last carriage shuddered as the thing on its roof dragged its claws across the metal.
And Kieran was gone.
No—not gone. He was on one knee beside her, one hand braced against the floor, his coat dark with blood. His pistol was still in his other hand.
His eyes found her.
They were the same gray eyes. The same hard, storm-colored eyes that had watched alley doors, assassin blades, and impossible ghosts without blinking.
