Chapter 31 · The Second Eve at the Scaffold
The child’s voice rose through the floorboards.
“Your second life is overdue.”
Eve Calder stood in the dark beneath the old Calder Registry, one hand pressed against the moving letter and the other wrapped around the hilt of a stolen knife. Dust sifted from the ceiling with every word. Somewhere above them, boots hammered across the registry’s ruined upper floor. The Clock Assembly had found them.
Kieran’s shoulders tightened. He turned toward the tunnel mouth, where pale blue light leaked through the cracked bricks.
“How many?” Eve whispered.
“Enough.”
“That isn’t a number.”
“It’s the one I have.”
Sora Bell crouched beside the map, her face ghost-white in the letter’s shifting glow. Ink crawled across the parchment like black insects, rearranging streets that had not existed for a century. At the bottom, beneath Mara Calder’s name, a new line burned itself into the paper.
SCAFFOLD NINE. OLD MERIDIAN SQUARE.
KIERAN VOSS DID NOT KILL HER ALONE.
The last sentence pulsed once, like a heartbeat.
Then the map folded itself into a narrow arrow and pointed toward the tunnel.
A bell rang overhead.
Not a city bell. This sound was smaller, sharper—the metallic click of a mechanism deciding something.
Sora flinched.
