The Last Hourglass Pact

Chapter 32 · The Clock That Eats Memory

The golden eye beneath the gallows blinked.

The square shuddered as if the city had taken a breath through its teeth. Frost raced across the cobblestones. Above them, the broken execution platform groaned, ropes swinging in the windless dark, while the living letter lay open at Eve Calder’s feet and bled ink into the cracks.

Kieran moved first.

He stepped between Eve and the eye, one hand already wrapped around the black-steel hilt at his hip. The blade came free with a sound like a clock spring snapping.

“Don’t look at it,” he said.

Eve laughed once. It came out thin and jagged. “That’s your advice?”

The eye widened beneath the gallows. Its iris was made of turning brass rings, each one engraved with names. Some she recognized. Couriers. Enforcers. Children who had vanished during the thirteen stolen minutes. Names she had heard whispered in alleys, names stamped on missing-person notices and funeral ledgers.

Then the rings turned again.

Her own name gleamed in the center.

EVE CALDER.

The thing below the square made a sound that was almost speech and almost the grinding of a thousand gears.

Mine.

The word pressed against her skull.

Eve staggered.
