The Last Hourglass Pact

Chapter 35 · The Clerk’s Double Oath

The last grain of sand struck the glass.

For one breath, nothing happened.

Then every memory vessel in the archive screamed.

The sound was not glass breaking. It was a thousand voices inhaling at once—mothers calling children by forgotten names, soldiers pleading with dead kings, lovers whispering apologies into years that no longer existed. Blue-white fractures raced through the suspended containers. Inside them, stolen moments spun like trapped lightning.

Eve staggered back as the record above the ruined dais rewrote itself again.

KIERAN ASH VOSS—EXECUTIONER.

Beneath it, in a hand that looked horribly like hers:

EVE CALDER—CONSENTING WITNESS.

The letters bled black, then flared crimson.

“No,” Eve whispered.

Kieran caught her wrist before she could reach for the record. His fingers were cold. Too cold. “Eve.”

“You signed it.” Her gaze stayed fixed on the page. “I signed it.”

“I don’t remember signing anything.”

“That’s the point, isn’t it?” She tore her wrist free. “You remember killing me. I remember giving you the hourglass. The Assembly remembers both of us agreeing to it. Which one of us is lying?”

Above them, boots thundered across the iron floor.

A voice drifted through the archive door.

“Kieran Ash Voss,” it called. Calm.
