The Last Pulse Contract

Chapter 12 · Lethal Resonance

"Get your face out of the dirt and move!" Kane’s voice wasn't a request. He had his hand clamped around my upper arm, hauling me up with enough force to bruise.

I didn't move. I glared at him, my chest heaving, the smell of ozone and burnt gunpowder still thick in the air. "You're a prototype. You're the damn switch, Kane. You can kill every one of us with a heartbeat."

"I'm the one keeping you alive right now," he snapped. He shoved me toward the narrow alleyway just as another round of sniper fire chewed through the concrete where we'd been lying a second ago. "Do you want to discuss my medical history while you're bleeding out on the pavement, or do you want to get out of the lockdown zone?"

I scrambled to my feet, my boots slipping on a patch of oily grime. "I can't trust you. You're a walking detonator for my brother's heart."

Kane stopped dead. He spun around, pinning me against the cold brick wall of the alley. He didn't touch me with his hands, but he leaned in, his chest inches from mine.
