The Last Pulse Contract

Chapter 13 · Eyes in the Cage

"Don't move." Kane caught my wrist before my fingers reached the security panel.

I twisted hard. His grip tightened, warm and brutal around my pulse.

"Take your hand off me."

"The panel is live. Touch it and every camera in this wing wakes up."

"Then stop standing there like a statue and tell me what to do."

His eyes stayed on mine. The emergency lights painted one side of his face red. The other side disappeared into the dark service corridor.

"You want to get your brother out?" he asked.

"That was the plan before you grabbed me."

"You want him alive?"

My jaw locked. "Try that question again and I'll break your nose with my free hand."

Kane leaned closer. His shoulder brushed mine as he reached past me. The faint hum under his ribs had changed. It was faster now, rough enough that I could feel it through the wall between us.

His heart link was reacting to me.

Or warning me.

"Mara," he said, low. "Answer me."

"Yes. I want him alive."

"Good. Then follow my instructions."

"You don't get to order me around because your company built a leash into your chest.
