The Last Thornwood Luna

Chapter 20 · Chains for a Luna

"You're going to lock me up."

Cade doesn't answer. He's half-carrying me through the trees, my blood soaking into his shirt, and his jaw is locked so tight I can hear his teeth grinding. The camp's close. I can smell smoke and roasting meat and unwashed wolves crowding around the fires.

"Cade."

"Shut up."

I try to twist away but my shoulder screams and my vision goes white. He catches me before I drop, his arm iron across my ribs. "Don't. You'll rip it open worse."

"Then tell me what you're doing."

He stops walking. We're at the edge of the clearing now, just outside the firelight. I can see shapes moving between the tents. Wolves laughing. Someone's singing off-key. They have no idea three of their own are lying dead in the forest with arrows in their throats.

Cade's hand tightens on my waist. "Grey sent those men to kill me."

"I know."

"He knows something about you. Something he thinks is worth my life."

My heart kicks against my ribs. "Cade—"

"I don't care what it is."

I freeze. He's not looking at me.
