The Ledger Sovereign

Chapter 2

The Ledger Sovereign. First Trade

"Stop talking and start praying," Kaela hissed.

The edge of her blade pressed harder against my windpipe. A thin, stinging line of red bloomed on my skin. "I don't care about your contracts or your fancy book. I care about who paid you to play the victim while holding a god-tier artifact."

I choked out a laugh. It sounded more like a wheeze.

"Nobody... paid me," I gasped. "I'm just a guy too broke to die properly."

"Liar."

She shifted. Her thigh pinned me against the damp brick wall, hard. I could smell leather, cold steel, and a sharp, ozone scent clinging to her gear. She was too close. I could feel the heat radiating off her body, a stark contrast to the freezing mist swirling around us.

"The Ledger doesn't bond with losers, Quinn. You're either a genius liar or the luckiest idiot in the city. Which one is it?"

I looked down. The gold lettering on the book was pulsing—a slow, hungry heartbeat. A prompt floated in the air, visible only to me:

[ASSET DETECTED: MEMORY. MARKET VALUE: 5,000 GOLD CREDITS. SELL?]

"I'm not lying," I rasped. "And I'm definitely not lucky. Look at me. I'm wearing rags with a knife at my throat. This look like a winning streak to you?"

Kaela didn't flinch. Her eyes were flint, scanning my face for a tell. "You're shaking. That's either fear or you're hiding something. Give me the book. Now. Or you don't live through the next ten seconds."

"I can't," I said. "It's bonded. Give it to you now and it'll probably incinerate your hands. But if we make a deal... if I use the Ledger to pay off whatever's keeping you on this side of the blade..."

She paused. The pressure on my neck eased by a fraction of a millimeter. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"I don't know who you work for," I said, trying to steady my breath. "But the Ledger doesn't just move money. It moves *things*. Loyalty. Debts. Luck. I can see the price of everything, Kaela. Even yours."

"You think you can buy me?" She let out a sharp, mocking sound. "I've seen empires fall, kid. I've seen men offer me cities just to crawl away. You're a bankrupt merchant's son with a piece of old parchment. You have nothing."

[SYSTEM ALERT: TRANSACTION REQUIRED FOR STABILIZATION. CURRENT BALANCE: 0. SELECT ASSET TO LIQUIDATE.]

The book was screaming. I needed capital. Now.

I scrolled through the memories. Most were trash—the taste of a stale apple, the sound of my father snoring. Then I saw it. A vivid, searing memory of my mother’s face the day she left. The exact words she whispered. The scent of jasmine and desperation.

It was the only thing I had left of her. It was also the most valuable thing I owned.

"I have something," I whispered. "Just... give me a second."

"You have three seconds," Kaela replied. "Three. Two..."

I slammed my mental will into [SELL].

*Swoosh.*

It wasn't a sound. It was a vacuum. Like something had been pressed against my skull and sucked out a piece of my soul. For a heartbeat, there was a void. I remembered someone had left. I remembered I was sad. But the *why* was gone. The face, the voice, the jasmine—all erased. Replaced by a cold, numerical certainty.

[TRANSACTION COMPLETE. +5,000 GOLD CREDITS ADDED TO ACCOUNT.]

A tear rolled down my cheek. I didn't know why I was crying. I just knew something precious was gone, and in its place was a numb, echoing silence.

But the Ledger was glowing now. A blinding, arrogant gold that lit up the entire alley.

"What did you do?" Kaela demanded. Her blade trembled against my skin. "What is that light?"

"I just bought my way into the conversation," I said. The grief was gone, replaced by a surge of adrenaline. I leaned forward, pressing my chest against hers, forcing her to either back up or cut me. She didn't move. "Now, let's talk about your contract. The one that's eating you alive."

Kaela froze. "How do you know about my contract?"

"The book tells me everything that can be bought," I said, my voice growing steady. "You're a Debtblade, aren't you? Bound to a contract you didn't sign. Every kill goes toward a balance you'll never reach. You're not a mercenary. You're a slave with a fancy sword."

"Shut up," she spat, but the blade wavered.

"I know you're tired of killing for a ghost," I countered. "I know your sister is holding the other end of that debt. And I know if you don't hit your quota by the end of the month, the blood-clause triggers."

Kaela went pale. She slammed me back against the wall, the hilt of her knife bruising my collarbone. "Who are you? Who the hell are you working for?"

"Nobody!" I yelled. "I'm just the guy who can actually pay it! Look!"

I flicked my wrist. The Ledger snapped open. A holographic page materialized in the air, shimmering in gold ink. No numbers. Just a chain. A heavy, spectral chain wrapped around a silhouette that looked exactly like Kaela.

[TARGET: KAELA VANCE. STATUS: INDEBTED. CURRENT BUYOUT PRICE: 25,000 GOLD CREDITS.]

Kaela stared. Her breathing became ragged. "Impossible. The contract is locked in the Guild's vault. Nobody buys a Debtblade without the Overlord's seal."

"The Ledger doesn't care about seals," I said. "It's a god-book. It rewrites the rules. I only have five thousand right now, but I can get the rest. I can flip this city, Kaela. I can buy your freedom—and then I can buy the people who put you in those chains."

She looked at me. Really looked at me. I wasn't just a mark anymore. I was a possibility.

"You're insane," she whispered. "You'd risk your gold on a girl who just tried to slit your throat?"

"I'm a merchant," I said with a crooked grin. "I only buy things that are undervalued. And right now, a lethal assassin who owes me her life is the best deal in the district."

She stared at me for a long beat. The tension was thick enough to choke on. Her eyes flickered down to my lips, then back to my eyes. A spark of something—not trust, but curiosity.

"If you're lying," she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous low, "I won't just kill you. I'll make sure you're conscious for every single second of it."

"Fair enough," I replied. "Now put the knife away before you accidentally make me a very expensive corpse."

She didn't move. Instead, she stepped closer. Her chest brushed mine, her voice a ghost of a whisper against my ear. "Five thousand isn't enough, Quinn. You're a long way from twenty-five."

"I've got a plan," I said, mostly making it up. "I just need a bodyguard who knows where the bodies are buried."

She finally pulled the blade back, but didn't sheath it. Steel stayed visible. A reminder of who held the power. "Fine. I'll play along. But the second this smells like a trap, your head comes off."

I leaned back against the brick, breathing out. The Ledger vibrated in my hand. A new prompt appeared, and it wasn't for me.

[NEW ASSET DETECTED: KAELA VANCE.] [MARKET STATUS: FOR SALE.]

I blinked. The book wasn't asking if I wanted to buy her freedom. It was telling me she was already a commodity.

Kaela narrowed her eyes. "What is it now? What's the book saying?"

I watched the [BUY] button pulse with seductive gold light. I wondered what it would feel like to actually own a Debtblade. To have her loyalty not because of a deal, but because of a transaction.

"Nothing," I lied, snapping the book shut. "Just checking the exchange rate."

"You're a terrible liar, Quinn," she said, gesturing toward the alley mouth. "Move. Before the Guild realizes I haven't brought back your head."

I followed, but the Ledger burned against my palm. It wanted more. It didn't just want memories; it wanted a portfolio. And Kaela was the perfect first investment.

As we hit the street corner, a heavy boot stepped into the light. A man in a grey coat, face scarred and cold, blocked our path. He wasn't a thug. He was something much worse.

"Kaela," the man said, his voice like grinding stones. "Why is the target still breathing?"

Kaela's hand flew to her hilt, her body tensing into a killing coil. "He's... useful, Varric."

Varric Hale didn't look at her. His eyes were locked on the book in my hand. "Useful. Right. Give me the Ledger, boy, and I might let you choose how you die."
