Chapter 11 · The Spliced Lie

Chapter 11: The Spliced Lie

"That's not what she said."

I'm up off the couch before I finish the sentence, bare feet hitting cold floor, because the television just played my mother's voice and it came out wrong. Cut. Stitched. Her last breath turned into a confession she never gave.

"June." Luca's hand closes around my wrist, not gentle. "Sit down."

"He's airing it live. Right now. On the six o'clock feed." My father's face fills the screen, jaw set the way it does for cameras, grief rehearsed into his eyebrows. Behind him a chyron crawls: ATTORNEY GENERAL CANDIDATE RELEASES BOMBSHELL TAPE — DAUGHTER NAMED IN LAUNDERING SCHEME.

"I know what channel it's on." Luca doesn't look away from the screen either. His thumb presses hard against the pulse in my wrist like he's counting it.

On screen, my father raises a hand for quiet that nobody in that pressroom is giving him. "I never wanted this made public," he says, voice cracking on cue. "But my daughter's silence has gone on long enough. Here — in her mother's own words."

The recording plays.
