Chapter 21 · Under the Tower
The elevator floor jumped under my boots.
Sable slammed one hand against the brass rail. Dorian hit the mirrored wall hard enough to crack it, then folded over with a rough sound in his throat.
Something underneath us hit the elevator again.
Not the cables. Not a mechanical jolt.
A fist.
A huge one.
“Tell me that was part of your fancy building security,” I said.
Dorian’s face had gone gray under the blood streaking his jaw. “It isn’t.”
The private elevator lights blinked once. Twice.
Then every floor number vanished.
The panel went black except for one symbol burning red in the middle.
A crescent moon with a line cut through it.
Sable stared at it. “Oh, hell no.”
“What is that?” I asked.
“No,” she said again, backing into the corner. “Absolutely not. Ash, tell me you sealed that level.”
Dorian didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
My pendant heated against my chest. Not warm. Not annoying-hot. It felt like somebody had pressed a lit stove burner straight through my shirt.
I grabbed it and sucked in a breath.
The black stone had turned silver at the edges.
And it was pulling.
Not physically.
