Chapter 31 · Too Close To Cut

"Don't touch that door, Mara."

Rhys caught her wrist before her fingers reached the emergency release. His grip locked around her, hot and hard, while the elevator shuddered beneath their boots.

Mara twisted once. Nothing. His arm did not move.

"Take your hand off me."

"You open it, the security net sees us."

"Good. Maybe it’ll send someone competent."

His eyes dropped to her pulse. The black mark under her skin had started glowing again, a thin line of blue crawling from her wrist toward her elbow. Rhys saw it. Of course he did. He saw everything when it came to her body, her magic, her weak spots.

He pulled her away from the panel.

"We have ninety seconds before the lift reaches the archive level," he said. "If the building’s system catches your mark, every hunter in the tower gets our location."

"Then stop dragging me into corporate elevators."

"You were the one who stole the access key."

"You were the one who said you could get us out."

"I said I could get us in."

"That’s not better."

The elevator dropped another floor. The cables groaned overhead.
