Chapter 21 · You do not have a chance if the bond kills you first

"No, it cannot. If I leave now, the academy calls me a fraud. If I stay, I get a chance to level up."

Selene stepped close. The applause continued around them, loud enough to cover her low voice.

"You do not have a chance if the bond kills you first."

"Then help me make it worth the risk."

Selene's fingers tightened on Tess's sleeve.

For one dangerous second, she looked ready to pull Tess against her and drag her out of the hall by force.

Tess lifted her chin. "Go ahead. Carry me out. Everyone is watching."

Selene's eyes dropped to Tess's mouth.

The applause blurred.

"Do not tempt me," Selene said.

"That sounded like a threat."

"It was."

"Good. I was worried you were going soft."

Selene leaned in until their shoulders touched. Her breath brushed Tess's cheek, warm against the heat from the mark.

"You have no idea what soft looks like."

Tess's pulse jumped. "Then show me later."

Selene went perfectly still.

Tess had not meant to say it.

She also did not take it back.

Selene's gaze held hers for one long beat.
