He leaned closer. His knee pressed against mine.
"You want to know what I think?"

"I think you knew this chamber would react to us. I think you brought me here because you needed my blood to open the lower seal."
The words hit harder than the falling stone.
I pulled my hand away.
"You think I set this up?"
"I think you have secrets."
"So do you."
"I never denied it."

His expression barely moved, but his fingers curled against his thigh.
"Put your hand on the wound."
"That sounded almost like an apology."
"Don’t push me."
"You’re the one bleeding."
"Evelyn."
My name came out rough.

A plea.
That made it worse.
I pressed my palm over the wound.
Kane jerked beneath me. His hand shot to the back of my neck and held me close as a low grind rolled through the chamber.
The sound punched into my skull.
A hallway.
Boots running.
A woman crying.
