Chapter 45 · The Woman in the Contract

Kane drove the heel of his boot into the stone and twisted.

The current yanked his arm sideways.

A crack split the air.

His shoulder.

I screamed and grabbed him with both hands. "Kane!"

"Pull!"

"I'm trying!"

The flood tore him free. Half the water came with him, slamming us onto the platform.

He landed on top of me.

One hand hit the stone beside my head. Water ran from his hair onto my face. His chest crushed against mine, his heartbeat punching through his soaked shirt and into my ribs.

For one breath, we didn't move.

His mouth hovered inches from mine.

"Get off me," I whispered.

His eyes dropped to my lips, then snapped back up. "Tell me you can stand."

"Tell me what I did to you."

His jaw tightened. "You don't want that answer."

"Try me."

A tremor ripped through the platform. Kane crashed against me again. His thigh slid between mine, heat burning through our soaked clothes.

Wrong.

Too familiar.

My body remembered him even when I wanted nothing to do with him.

Kane shoved himself away first.

He dropped to one knee and snatched up the contract. Half the page had burned away.
