Chapter 49 · Did You Just Steal From Me?

He didn't let me go.

His other hand locked around my waist, holding me against him while the contract seal burned through my dress. Heat shot from my ribs to my throat.

The council chamber erupted in gasps.

I should've bitten him.

Instead, I grabbed the front of Kane's coat and dragged him closer.

His mouth crashed onto mine.

Kane made a low sound against my lips. His grip shifted, giving me just enough room to move.

That was all I needed.

My fingers slipped beneath the leather strap at his hip. The vault key hung there, cold and heavy beneath his coat.

I hooked it with two fingers.

Kane's mouth went still.

He knew.

I tore the key free and broke the kiss.

His hand stayed locked around my waist. His eyes had gone dark enough to make my pulse trip.

"Did you just steal from me?" he asked.

I closed my fist around the key. "You made me your wife in front of the council. I figured I was entitled to one wedding gift."

A councilor slapped both hands on the table. "This hearing is not over.
