The Warden's Binding

Chapter 50 · The Cost of Going Together

"Let go."

Kane's hand locked around my wrist before I could touch the breach.

"No."

The black split in the stone wall pulsed behind him. Red light leaked through it in thin, shaking lines, crawling over the floor and up Kane's boots.

Every line ended at my blood seal.

My seal.

"You said we were going in together," I snapped.

"I changed my mind."

"That must be exhausting for you. Being wrong this often."

His fingers tightened around my wrist. Heat pressed through my sleeve, hard and steady. Kane always held me like he expected me to break free.

He also always looked irritated when I did.

"Evelyn, listen to me." His voice dropped. "The breach is calling for both of us because the contract tied our lives together. If I go in first, it may let you go."

"And if you go in first, it may tear you apart."

"That's my problem."

"No. It became mine the second you put your name under mine."

His jaw jumped.

There it was.

Not the breach. Not Oscar. This.

The contract had stopped being ink and blood on a page. It was a chain now, wrapped around both our throats.
