Chapter 39 · Not Your Brother

"Nora, move!" Elias slammed into me hard enough to knock my shoulder against the iron cage.

The gun went off.

The shot punched through the space where my head had been. Metal screamed behind me. Elias twisted, putting his body between me and Finn before I could shove him away.

Finn stood ten feet across the chamber with the pistol locked in both hands. His face looked wrong. Not scared. Not angry. Just empty.

"Finn!" I yelled. "Look at me!"

His eyes slid to mine without stopping.

"Don't," Elias warned.

I elbowed him in the ribs. "Get off me."

"He'll fire again."

"He's my brother."

"No." Elias caught my wrist before I could step around him. His fingers closed over my pulse, hot and firm. Pain snapped through the binding between us. "That thing wearing his face isn't your brother."

Finn raised the gun another inch.

"Nora Kane," he said.

His voice was Finn's. The words weren't.

"You brought the outlaw into the cage. State your reason."

My mouth went dry. "Finn, you know me. You know who I am."

"Identify yourself."

"I changed your bandages when you cut your hand on the kitchen latch.
