The Warden's Unwanted Witness

Chapter 34 · The Burn List

"You put my name on the burn list?" I slammed the tablet into Lucas Vale's chest. "After you swore you wouldn't hand me over?"

His hand snapped around my wrist before the tablet hit the floor.

Not hard enough to bruise. Hard enough to remind me who had the command seal, the weapons, and half the city's locked doors.

"I didn't put your name there," he said.

"Your command did. That's the same thing when you're the man wearing its uniform."

His jaw locked.

The black command band around his wrist flashed red between us. A warning line crawled across its surface.

BURN ORDER ACTIVE.

My stomach dropped.

Behind him, every screen in the abandoned records room changed at once. Nora's emergency broadcast vanished. The tower feed broke into white static, then snapped to a clean image of my face.

My wanted file.

My execution photo.

Under it, one line appeared in white letters.

EVELYN VOSS. TERRORIST. SHOOT ON SIGHT.

Lucas turned toward the screens.

"That's not possible."

"You keep saying that like the city cares."

"Evelyn—"

"Don't say my name like you're surprised to see it on a kill order.
