The Warden's Unwanted Witness

Chapter 46 · The Voice on the Air

"She's the terrorist."

The guard pointed at Evelyn, then at Lucas. "Step away from her, Warden."

Lucas didn't move. He planted himself between Evelyn and the gun. "You're standing between her and the only witness who can prove your arrest order was forged. Choose carefully."

The guard's mouth tightened. His eyes darted toward the corridor.

A lock clicked open.

Evelyn spun toward the sound. "Nora?"

Nora stumbled out of the holding cell with blood streaked across her temple and one arm clamped over her ribs. She looked thinner than Evelyn remembered. Older.

Her eyes were still sharp enough to cut.

"You took your time," Nora rasped.

Evelyn caught her before her knees buckled. "You look like hell."

"You look worse."

Lucas reached for Nora.

Nora slapped his hand away. "Don't touch me, Vale. Your family put me in a cage once."

"I just got you out."

"After your code delivered me to them."

"I destroyed the code."

"Then destroy the rest of it."

Evelyn looked at Lucas. "The tower."

Nora's eyes snapped to her. "You recovered the testimony?"

"Part of it."

"Part is enough if we get it on air."

Lucas pulled Nora's arm over his shoulder.
