Chapter 64 · Evelyn, Move!

He rolled, drew his sidearm, and fired twice.

The nearest drone spun into the wall. Black fluid splashed across the archive seals.

The second dropped from the ceiling.

I kicked Lucas's knee sideways and fired over his shoulder. My bullet punched through the drone's optic. It crashed beside us, hot metal shrieking across the floor.

The third drone locked onto my chest.

Lucas saw it first.

"Evelyn, move!"

He grabbed my waist and yanked me sideways.

The rifle fired.

The blast slammed into his back.

His body crashed into mine. Heat tore through his coat, and his breath broke against my ear. For half a second, his arm went slack around me.

"Lucas!"

"I'm fine."

"You're bleeding."

"I've been worse."

"You're lying."

"I know."

His hand still locked around my waist. His fingers dug through my clothes, hard enough to bruise. His heartbeat slammed against my ribs, fast and uneven.

I shoved him away and fired again.

The bullet split the drone's core.
