Chapter 8 · You don't know me
"You don't know me."
"I know you put a blade against my heart."
The words stopped her cold.
A memory tried to surface. Cold metal. His hand around her wrist. His voice saying her name like he had said it a thousand times.
Then the moment broke apart.
Lia shoved him into the car.
"Argue after we stop being hunted."
He caught her around the waist before she could climb in. His grip pulled her against his chest. Pain punched through both of them from his shoulder, and their hearts slammed into the same beat.
"Don't command me again," he said near her ear.
His voice was low. Not quite a threat. Worse. A promise.
Lia planted one hand against his chest. His heartbeat struck her palm.
"Then stop making me save you."
His eyes dropped to her mouth.
The car lurched as Sable slammed the driver's door.
"Get inside before I leave you both here!"
Cael released Lia. She fell backward onto the seat, and he climbed in after her. The rear door slammed shut just as silver rounds punched through the alley wall.
Sable floored the pedal.
The car shot forward. Lia crashed into Cael's side.
