Chapter 31 · Undercity Broker - Chapter 31: Everyone Has a Lie

Dr. An's clinic smelled like antiseptic and old blood. Lin pushed through the door with Su Jin's arm slung over his shoulder, the box tucked under his other arm still warm from whatever the hell his mother's voice had been.

"I need a table," Lin said.

Dr. An looked up from a tray of instruments. Her face didn't move. "You bring trouble here?"

"She's bleeding. You want me to leave her in the hall?"

Dr. An pointed to the exam table in the back corner. Lin half-dragged Su Jin over and got her down. Su Jin's face was grey. The wound in her side was soaking through the makeshift bandage Lin had tied with his shirt.

"Gunshot?" Dr. An asked.

"Shrapnel. One of Lei's guys threw a flashbang in a tin room."

Dr. An didn't ask who Lei was. She pulled on gloves and started cutting away the bandage. "This is deep. She needs sutures and antibiotics. You have trade?"

Lin set the box on the counter. "I have questions."

"Questions don't pay for medical supplies."

"The Bureau sent you here, didn't they?"

Dr. An's hands stopped. Just for a second. Then she went back to cleaning the wound.
