Chapter 8 · Undercity Broker - Chapter 8: The Dead Man's Ledger

The corpse opened its eyes and said Lin Mo's name.

Not the name on his fake ID card. Not the alias he'd been using for the last two weeks down here. His real name. The one tied to three million in debt and a missing persons report he hoped nobody'd filed.

Lin let go of the wrist and stumbled back. His shoulder hit the container wall. The body didn't move. Just stared at him with eyes that shouldn't work anymore, cloudy and flat like month-old fish.

The curse mark on his arm burned cold.

"What the hell did you just make me touch?" Lin hissed at it.

The tattoo didn't answer. First time since he got the thing that it stayed quiet when he asked a question.

Behind him he heard Lei swearing and the wet sounds of the infected trying to get up. The alley was still blocked. He had maybe two minutes before one of them remembered he was trapped in here too.

Lin looked back at the corpse. It still hadn't blinked. The eyes tracked him when he moved.

"Okay," Lin said. "Okay. You know my name. What do you want?"

The corpse's jaw moved.
