Chapter 19 · Forbidden Resonance

"Get off me, Sera, or I break your arm."

Kael had me pinned against the brick wall with one hand around my wrist and a silver blade pressed under my jaw. His coat was torn. Blood ran from his eyebrow into one eye. He still looked annoyingly steady.

I smiled through my split lip. "You tried that last time. I bit you."

"You also tried to kill me."

"You survived. Stop being dramatic."

His grip tightened. The curse under my skin answered with a hot, ugly pulse. Blue light crawled over my fingers, then snapped across the space between us and struck his gauntlet.

Kael’s jaw clenched.

For one second, the alley vanished.

Power rushed through me. Not mine. His. Cold silver force tangled with the black heat of my curse, twisting together like two blades locked in a fight. My knees almost gave out.

Kael felt it too. His shoulders jerked. The knife dipped away from my throat.

"What the hell was that?" he demanded.

"You tell me. You’re the holy expert."

"Don’t call me holy."

"Fine. Murderous, self-righteous expert.
