His expression cracked.

There. The rage again.

It wasn’t aimed at me.

That should have made me feel safer.

It didn’t.

"Because someone changed the last page," he said.

I went still. "Who?"

"I don’t know yet."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No. I expect you to stay alive long enough to find out."

"By keeping me in your golden cage?"

"By keeping you where the Bureau can’t reach you."

"You are the Bureau’s favorite weapon."

"And you’re the woman they want dead before she remembers what happened."

The room seemed to shrink around us.

I searched his face for the trick. Kane was good at tricks. He could smile through a lie, shake hands with the people who ruined a life, and make an entire crowd believe he’d saved them.

But his hand at my waist was trembling.

Just once.

Then he forced it still.

"You’re lying," I said.

"Probably."

I blinked. "What?"

"You wanted honesty. That’s the closest version I have."

I almost laughed. It came out rough. "You’re unbelievable."

"You keep saying that like it’s new information."

"I’m leaving."

"No."

"You can’t stop me forever.
