Chapter 14 · Say that again

I lifted my head. "Say that again."

His gaze dropped to mine.

"You heard me."

"Say it again, Golden Boy. Tell me what you really think I am."

His grip tightened behind my shoulders. The pressure pulled me closer, chest to chest, until there wasn’t room for another breath between us.

"You want honesty?"

"I want you to stop hiding behind that stupid smile."

His eyes flashed gold.

The room shook.

Every cabinet door flew open. Cups launched from the counter and smashed against the wall. The overhead lights burst one after another, throwing sparks across the floor.

Kane shoved me down and covered me with his body.

A shock wave tore through the apartment. The windows rattled in their frames. Somewhere behind us, a pipe screamed.

Then silence hit.

I stared up at him.

His forearm was braced beside my head. His face hovered inches above mine. A thin cut marked his cheek, bright against his skin.

"Did you do that?" I asked.

"You did."

"You were the one glowing."

"You were the one provoking me."

"That’s not an answer."

"It’s the only one you’re getting.
