Chapter 18 · Dangerous Accomplices

"Take your hand off the door, Selah."

Kane caught my wrist before my fingers touched the security panel.

The contract mark under my skin flared hot. Six feet. No farther. No exceptions. His grip kept me on the safe side of that invisible leash, but his thumb pressed against my pulse like he wanted me to remember who controlled the distance.

I looked down at his hand. Then up at his face.

"You brought me into a locked Bureau archive and now you're worried about my hands?"

"I'm worried about the building's alarms. There's a difference."

"Sure. You only drag me into places with armed guards when you're feeling considerate."

His jaw tightened. Good. The perfect Golden Boy still had buttons.

He released me, but not before his fingers slid away from my wrist in one slow pass. My skin stayed warm where he had touched me. Annoying. Completely unnecessary. Also impossible to ignore.

Kane stepped in front of the panel. His shoulder brushed mine as he keyed in a code.

"What are we stealing?" I asked.

"A file."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the one you're getting.
