He took my hand and pressed it against the cut on his lip.

Warm blood touched my fingertips.

The bond jolted.

His eyes stayed on mine.

"There," he said. "Satisfied?"

I should have wiped my hand on his jacket.

I did anyway, slowly, keeping my eyes on him.

"Not even close."

A second alert flashed across the transmitter.

INBOUND BUREAU SIGNAL.

Kane's hand dropped from my waist.

I stepped away. "They're here."

"No."

"It says inbound."

"That signal is coming from the room."

"You already said that."

"No. I said the monitor was inside the room. This is different."

The walls clicked.

One after another, the security panels shut down.

The locked door behind me released with a soft mechanical sound.

Kane spun toward it.

I grabbed the transmitter and followed.

"Don't open that," he said.

"You told me not to touch the case. I touched it. We're past listening."

"Selah, stop."

"You want to order me around? Try harder."

The door opened two inches.

No one stood outside.

A thin red beam cut across the floor and landed on Kane's shoes.

His whole body went still.

"What is that?" I asked.

"A scan."

"From where?"

"The room.
