Chapter 36 · I'm trying to make sure you get a choice

He looked at the chip in my hand.

"I'm trying to make sure you get a choice."

"By bleeding out on a fake contract?"

"I didn't know it was fake."

"You always know everything."

"Not everything."

The third agent rushed us.

I stepped out first and drove the rifle stock into his wrist. Kane caught the barrel before it swung back, twisted it free, and dropped the man with one brutal strike to the side of his helmet.

The second agent raised his weapon.

Kane shoved me behind him.

"Don't," I snapped.

"Stay there."

"You don't get to order me around."

"Selah."

He said my name like a warning and a plea at the same time.

I hated that it worked.

He fired once. The agent's weapon flew from his hand. I crossed the room, kicked it under the table, and locked the man's elbow behind his back.

"Where's the override key?" I asked.

The agent spat through his visor.

I tightened his arm until he gasped.

"Try again."

"Go to hell."

"Already had a reservation."

Kane limped over and crouched beside us.
